Karela ! (bitter gourd)


As a child, I had some terrible memories with this vegetable. I vaguely remember, my father sitting by our side on the dinner table, forcing me and my brothers to eat that bitter stuff. When we cry, he would tell “tu kha ! mu dekhibi prana kou bate jiba” (I want to see how it becomes a matter of life and death if you eat it...)


However, you can’t force it on a child. Let the process of self learning do the miracle and it did. As I grew up I realised that the truth of bitter gourd is much sweeter than the lies of the chocolate cream. Though my tongue still hates it, but my body accepts it like elixir. And thanks to my bong mom, I learned some good ways to make it delicious. Sharing with you one of the popular recipes today.





Ready for a dip in the heating oil ! Fry it until its dark golden brown and serve it hot with Garom Bhat (rice) and dal (lentil) .
